Acrow Bridge Awarded Contract to Provide Temporary Replacement of Port Bruce Bridge in Ontario

Restoration of town’s only passage over Catfish Creek critical for public safety and convenience of residents

BOLTON, Ontario, July 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, has been awarded the contract to furnish a single-lane temporary replacement of the Port Bruce Bridge over the Catfish Creek on Imperial Road/County Road 73 in Port Bruce, Ontario. The temporary bridge became necessary after the existing bridge, a 54-year-old concrete structure, collapsed in February amid extensive flooding caused by snowmelt and heavy rains throughout Southwestern Ontario.

At the time of the failure, a large gravel-filled dump truck was crossing the bridge and was left stranded and partially submerged at a 45-degree angle. While there were no injuries in the accident, the truck remained there for four weeks until it was lifted off with a giant crane in an event that drew media attention and a large crowd of onlookers.

The Port Bruce Bridge is the only route over Catfish Creek, which divides the north and south sides of the small town on the shores of Lake Erie. The bridge collapse resulted in a 5km detour for both residents and emergency responders and has impacted local businesses. The detour has also inconvenienced visitors to the area, which is a popular destination for walleye and Lake Erie yellow perch fishing during the May to early October fishing season.

The temporary span purchased from Acrow will be 54.8 meters (180 feet) long and 5.5 meters (18 feet) wide, with an epoxy aggregate-coated steel deck and a CL-625 ONT Truck load rating. Construction on the temporary bridge has begun and is expected to be completed by early August.
