    As if anything President Trump said could be true.

      Dallow also said that Trump said Omar had married her brother. This is an outright lie. What Trump actually said was that he had heard that she had but he did not know anything about it.
      They then went and tried to smear Trump with his past association with that reptile Epstein. No mention that Trump ejected him from Mar a Largo for bad behaviour. Also no mention of Bill Clintons much closer association with Epstein.

      I actually think that reporters nowadays, including NZ reporters, don’t actually care about the truth. What they care about is advancing their left wing agenda and staying woke.
      
      There is abundant evidence that Omar filed joint tax returns with a man she was not married to, while being married to another man. She appears to have married her brother in an immigration scam. Meanwhile she was actually married to another man.
      
      So there appears to be the longest list of criminal behaviour by any member of Congress in living memory. The list includes tax fraud, immigration fraud and bigamy.
      
      Omar is getting the attention she deserves and Simon Dallow does the public of NZ a disservice with his shoddy reporting.

      There’s more to it, and you can find the details on line. She’s from a prominent family in Somalia but not the family she claimed to be a member of to gain her original asylum. She does appear to have contracted a marriage with her actual full brother in order to allow him into the USA. He couldn’t get in as her brother because she was claiming to be a member of a different family in order to get in with that family which already had asylum granted.
      
      It’s tangled, but along the way she’s committed a number of crimes and perjured herself in a number of statutory declarations.
      
      If investigated she *could* serve a lengthy term but is unlikely to be charged as she has the get out of jail free card of being a prominent Democrat and hence is unlikely even under Trump to be investigated. The Minnesota AG is (being a Democrat) not going to investigate even if presented with verifiable facts. One law for the peons and another for their masters – that’s the Democrat way…

        She avoids any specific financial or economic question;
        She will not answer questions about any matter that a NZ First minister been involved in.
        She will not answer matters about trade.
        
        Usually she is prepared for broad topics, but if there is breaking news she should know about, but doesn’t she always gives evasive answers or will not answer.

  In an oral language society land ownership is described in knowledge trusted to special elders and is shown in carvings etc. Possession by battle gave title to a tribe. The individual rights were very nebulous. Hence our Maori Land Court.
  
  NZ has for non-Maori land a registry system where the title is the actual entry in the Register. Elsewhere in the Pacific special Courts deal with titles affirmed in oral genealogies. Reciting such genealogies publicly can be a crime.

Trump has provided a master class in how to bring down Jacinda ans the CoL next year.

Trump through his Tweet forced Pelosi and the Democratic NC to back the squad, even though they had been trying to distance themselves from the train wreck that is the squad.

National, over the next 12 months must do the same. Attack each CoL minister (Labour or otherwise) for the failures in their portfolio areas. National must make a lot of noise. Make PriNZess have to defend each and every CoL screw up and failure. Make it guilt by association!

      Being in the middle means keeping taxes down, a not too generous welfare system, efficiency in administration and freedom. Private enterprise can do most everything but on general required social needs they add an expensive layer of costs. We do better with Pharmac etc.

  I was working for HNZC when the change of gov’t happened and the way we had to contort ourselves to make Kiwibuild seem possible was embarrassing.
  
  Suffice to say that I pulled the ejection handle after a couple of months. Happier now as a small business owner (well as happy as one can be being a business owner under a Labour govt).

    And perhaps the suggestions are good sense – if AOC really thinks she has answers, surely applying those “answers” to Puerto Rico and showing in that environment that they work, would be a powerful and persuasive argument for her policies, no ? PR certainly needs some help given the bunch of corrupt crooks that have run the place into the ground. I don’t think power is fully restored yet to PR after the hurricane 2 years ago – because the system was so underfunded and rundown by years of neglect it isn’t a case of rebuilding but almost starting out new. Great stuff from Ryan Fox overnight with a 29 on the second nine at Royal Portrush; the lowest nine hole score in Open Championship history.

Fox starts his second round tonight in a tie for fourth, two shots out of the lead. Royal Portrush brought some of the best golfers in the world to their knees last night; if you miss the fairway, the rough is brutal. Fox tees off at 6.30pm New Zealand time, and Sky Sport has full coverage of the day’s play from 5.30pm; it’s fantastic viewing, and the move to take the Open Championship back to Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years has been a huge success. All tickets for the Open sold out, and 190,000 people will watch over the four days.

    My wife and I went to the first round of the 2015 Open Championship at St Andrews; the day after my 60th birthday. As well as being a bucket list item ticked off, I got to see my favourite golfer ever, Tom Watson, play in his final Open. It was a day I will never forget.

      Until a few years back, when my then manager sent me on a 12 hr course that the company provided to ensure internal and client facing presentations were effective and added value. Now presenting on my area of expertise and public speaking is something I quite look forward to.

Maybe time to stop serving alcohol on flights?

    The young Chinese stewardess looked a little confused so I explained about whisky but only a dash of water.
    
    She returned with a full glass and my wife laughed as did I as we assumed the message hadn’t quite gotten through and I was holding a glass of water with a slug of whisky.
    
    Wrong, it was a full 8 ounce glass of whisky with a dash.
    
    I managed one drink on the whole flight and still felt slightly pissed when I arrived.

    Can agree about the hangover part, drinking in the dry atmosphere at a simulated 6-8,000 ft altitude apparently gives each drink the equivalent of 2 at sea level. It was a long time ago but had a horrific second leg of a flight after a session with a couple of friends on one trip.
    
    Also agree that I’ve very rarely seen conspicuously drunk passengers, though I’ve certainly heard of it happening.

    There you will encounter British holiday tourists by the 1000s who are akin to the Gypsys who visited New Zealand in January. These people are feral, the likes of which you have never encountered other than on a Jerry Springer show. As I say avoid at all costs, and never sit near them on a low budget flight.

  The only reason for shipborne reactors is that this gives a way to rapidly build something in one part of the globe and actually deploy it elsewhere.
  
  It is far better to actually build the things on the ground. Far less engineering compromises means a better result and lower costs.

    I disagree, there are many fundamental reasons why this is the best solution:
    -Can mass produce quickly in a specialised factory in a year or two for minimum costs, with little money wasted on interest payments over decade long construction.
    -Don’t have to move highly skilled workforce to shitty locations for many-years long construction projects, that’s unaffordable in era of 2-income families.
    -Side steps Nimbyism – out of sight off coast.
    -Decommissioning and major refurbishment or maintenance can be done cheaply at specialist shipyards.

      While all the points you raise are valid in many contexts, I don’t think they are as valid for NZ.
      
      When you are dealing with trying to build infrastructure in shitholistans mired in corruption then being able to build and bring helps. These are not really issues in NZ which has the skills to build stuff.
      
      Shipborne generation is also good for bringing up power quickly after a tsunami etc. and nobody can argue that they give huge flexibility. But when you’re designing for base load there is not much need for flexibility – the need will still be there in 10, 20 or 30 years.
      
      Building a ship makes for massive limits in the arrangement of the plant because the ship is only so wide. That limits the size of power ships. My understanding is that the biggest power ships out there are less than 200MW. Tiny. Meanwhile single large generators are routinely build over 1000MW and 3-5GW total for a multi-generator plant. That makes power ships very expensive to build.
      
      Next: lifetime. A concrete power station is built to last 60+ years with a refurbishment cycle. Power ships last far less than that and maintenance costs are high.
      
      Worst case scenarios are not much different for power ships anchored in a harbour vs one on the shore. It is way easier to engineer in containment ponds etc on the shore than in a ship.

    Trouble is that there aren’t (yet) any commercial scale molten salt Thorium reactors though there are a number of projects underway. The US had a working test plant in the 60’s and 70’s I think but closed it down. It worked fine but wasn’t a significant power producer – I don’t think it was hooked up to a steam or working fluid power generating plant at all.
    
    I’m all in favour of the idea, but it does need the construction of several test reactors to make sure all the bugs are ironed out before any large scale production begins.

        Secretary Acosta markedly didn’t say at his pre-resignation press conference that Epstein was associated with “intelligence”, but did appear to go out of his way not to deny it.
        
        He certainly has had access to very large sums and without any real explanation of how he made that money. Another suggestion is that he is a very large scale money launderer and takes a percentage.
        
        At this stage, it’s guessing.
        
        For what it’s worth I doubt it affects Trump significantly or this wouldn’t be out in public.

Ive been thinking. The retirement village operators have all had flat sales over the past year or so. IMHO this is because BBs are deciding to stay in their own homes rather than take a 30% plus haircut when they vacate(die) and also not participate in any property value increases.

Now most of the operators have large developments on process plus a large land bank.

Question, Would a future Labour/Green government require the operators to seel or lease their surplus units to Housing New Zealand.

Afterall most of the village inhabitants will be Nat voters and the Government can sell the idea as a social requirement housing the homeless and also introducing “Diversity” into the retirement villages.

        To illustrate further … it is also interesting that Canterbury residential building consents since the 2017 election on a monthly basis have moved from around 380 to 440.
        
        Thanks to the smaller and therefore functional Councils of Waimak and Selwyn leading the way, Greater Christchurch is really moving ahead as it is becoming increasingly affordable … both for residential and commercial (refer recent JLL report).
        
        Greater Christchurch will become even more attractive and affordable as the Northern and Southern motorways open early 2020.
        
        No wonder the Greater Christchurch restaurant sector leaves overly expensive Auckland’s in the dust.

To ACT party members out there. You need a new deputy leader. Beth Holbrouke is a disaster for your cause. As Chair of the Rodney Local Board she is out of her depth and is being led by the interests oh the deputy on her local board ticket (who wants to be the Local Ward Councillor).

Beth Holbrouke is so out of her depth in her role she would be at home in the CoL. Her problems began early last year when her ticket put forward as a policy that Rodney ratepayers should pay an annual target rate of $150 per household to fix Rodney Transport. This proposal was added to Auckland City’s PR exercise of the 10 year plan for Auckland. Sadly, the majority of Rodney residents believed this proposal would work and they voted in favour of it.

The trouble for Holbrouke, Phelan Pirie (her deputy) and the other Rodney First councillors, reality is a bitch. One year on and over $4m collected by the targeted rate, most of the money spent has been spent on Transport consultants advising the Local Board and 3 poorly patronized bus services frequented by SuperGold and School children passengers.

Anyhow, as a means to inform and hear from locals Holbrouke and co have set up a number of local Facebook pages with themselves as administrators. However, because people are now feeling rather aggrieved and feel cheated over what the local board did and has been doing with the rate money collected, the locals cent on the said Facebook pages. However, in order to control debate Holbrouke, Pirie and co have been known to use stooges to post pieces in support of their actions and when this doesn’t work against those objecting, the vociferous local is blocked from the Facebook page.

In summary, you have the ACT Deputy Leader denying someone free speech, because that person has accurately critiqued what Holbrouke & co have done and what they have not done.

  You can’t control your phenotype, but you can (through culture) promote or demote aspects of it. Culture can modify a phenotype.
  For example, a phenotype than is more agressive and impulsive can develop a mitigating culture that promotes and rewards patience and thoughtfulness.

    That is certainly true for an individual, but is not true of a society.
    
    Societal norms can influence the long-term phenotypes of the individuals.
    
    For example, consider violence. If we have a society that shuns violent people and does not provide them breeding opportunities then the phenotype gets bred out of existence. Women would rather breed with a generally good bloke with a stable job etc that can provide her with resources etc.
    
    The entrenched welfare state screws that up. The woman has less concern about where she gets resources from (the state will provide) so bugger the good bloke – rather go with the more exciting “bad boy”. If he leaves/gets locked up there are always more available.
    
    Worse still, that woman is more likely to see baby breeding for dole as a “career option”. Instead of reducing the undesirable phenotype, it has instead been increased!

    And seriously, it will not end well. Expressing your view once is OK. Even twice is probably OK. But after being told “Thanks for your opinion, but no”, you don’t keep it up. There are many things the Australian Government could do if they continue to be antagonised, e.g.
    
    1. New Zealanders who entered Australia as residents before 26 February 2001 are still treated as special residents with all the same entitlements as Australians except for voting rights. Australia could scrap these privileges and treat all New Zealanders under the “new” rules.
    
    2. Australia could announced a review of the trans tasman travel arrangements. That would really escalate things.
    
    Another piece of context. Before 2001, the New Zealand Government compensated Australia for the cost of welfare benefits to New Zealanders. However Australia kept demanding more money, threatening to cut off entitlements to New Zealanders if the money was not forthcoming. The Clark government was not too concerned at the time, figuring that the priority was New Zealanders at home, not in Australia. And of course the entitlements of all the New Zealanders already in Australia were protected. It took some years for it to become a big issue, as the stock of folk in Australia were outnumbered by newcomers treated under the new rules.
    
    Finally, I simply do not buy this argument that New Zealanders in Australia since childhood are really “defacto” Australians and should not be deported. Your nationality is not who you feel you are. It is what is on your passport. It is absurd to think that you can run justice and immigration policies based on which country they “feel” they belong to, rather than based on actual citizenship. And yet the media here run this line all the time. It is bullshit.

Ardern was commenting on the state of global affairs – Ardern contends that nationalist and authoritarian movements are being spawned by a combinations of growing wealth inequality and distrust/disaffection with governments. – What on earth do you suppose she is trying to say.

    Tarrant’s “fair trial rights” (while a valid concern) is the least of the reasons given. That’s just a pretext. It almost leads one to infer that Tarrant may not have been the only one involved. Four people were initially arrested, according to the news reports at the time. Who were they?
    
    This is further speculation of course, but, for instance, I am fairly sure that the initial reports about the ‘hero who chased the shooter from the Linwood mosque’ involved him chasing a guy off, who then got into a vehicle containing another person(s). There was also an anti-terrorist exercise, coincidentally, occurring in Christchurch on the day. Lot’s of guys running round with automatic/semi-automatic weapons. Just as there were multiple Air Force exercises occurring on the morning of 9/11. What’s an exercise, and what is not?

      Two of those people were released I believe. I think it turned out that they weren’t involved but we’re in a car nearby and had weed on them or something. Basically they were stoners out for a cruise and got caught up in it. I can’t find a reference for my recollection though!
      
      Anyhow, people might be interested to read the Wikipedia page. It has plenty of detail which might allay some of the concerns that everything is suppressed and it’s all a government move to control the narrative etc

Such excessive suppression is used to hide the uncomfortable reality from us. If evidence exonerated people and agencies it would all be public. If it’s suppressed it is because the powers that be don’t want the truth to be known.
        
        The Royal Commission will be a whitewash in the tradition of the Warren Commission Report. The outcome will be “everyone acted accordingly so nothing to see here.” Then we will all be expected to go about our lives safe in the knowledge that all is hunky dory.
        
        Tarrant will be painted as an aberration, acting alone and without the knowledge of any so-called intelligence agency.         I assume you are asking me? You fail to directly address anyone specifically which you should make a practice. Anyway….the point is this: logically, I can’t say for sure what they are hiding, because they are hiding it. But based on the mass suppression of almost any information, we can safely infer that there is SOMETHING that they DON’T want us to know.
        
        I speculate that they know many people agree that mass third world immigration is an issue and that serious consequnces will flow from it in the future. Why have they never put it to the electorate? The Government wants people to think Tarrant holds a view inconsistent with all others in NZ. That is not the case. Many reasonable people have seen what is happening in Europe and foresee the same happening here.
        
        Let’s be clear: I cannot and will not condone Tarrant’s actions, but you cannot objectively say that he didn’t have the balls to put his money where his mouth is.

    It might be exactly like what you think a bomb would sound like, but it is not what a bomb actually does sound like.
    
    I heard the bang today from about 2km away. I have also been within a few hundred metres of a real bomb going off (thanks Mandela). Big difference.
    
    The difference is mainly the ignition speed difference between something like gas or gunpowder etc igniting (relatively slow – a few hundred metres per second max – normally subsonic) and explosives detonating (very fast – some over 5km/sec – I once did some measurements of some explosives at 7km/sec). Thus a bomb makes more of a “crack” sound than a “boom” sound.
    
    People who have heard a high power rifle firing vs a firework going off will know what I mean.

Nice work from Simon Bridges this afternoon, with his “apology” to Julie Anne Genter over her proposal to tax new vehicle sales:

Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges has today apologised to Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter for releasing false information about the Government’s car tax.

“In recent statements, National claimed Labour’s car tax would increase the cost of some of New Zealand’s most popular vehicles by up to $3000. We were basing this on information in the Government’s Clean Car Discount Scheme.

“But we’ve since had a good look at another piece of work by the Government – its Clean Car Standard Scheme – and discovered even more hidden costs.

“The truth is, the actual cost of Julie Anne Genter’s car tax on Kiwis could be more than $6000 per vehicle.

“Alongside the Government’s plan to tax higher-emissions vehicles, it is proposing a vehicle emissions target, meaning importers will be charged a penalty of between $50 and $100 per gram of CO2 on vehicles that don’t come in under the target from 2025.

“That could slap an extra $4500 onto the import cost of an average new car and an extra $2250 onto the cost of an average used car – costs that will almost certainly be passed on to buyers.

“More than 91 per cent of the vehicles being imported into the country today don’t satisfy the Minister’s emissions expectations, so this could be a massive tax grab for the Government.

“Julie Anne Genter wants to tell Kiwis what cars they can and cannot drive, and dictate to dealers what cars they can and cannot sell.

“She’s clearly spent too much time in Wellington and not enough in the regions because she hasn’t clicked that not all New Zealanders have low-emission vehicle options that fit their lifestyle.

“What, then, are car dealers in Feilding, Greymouth and Dargaville supposed to do? They can’t just start selling cars their customers don’t want.

“I’d like to say sorry to the Minister for underestimating the true cost of this tax on hard-working New Zealanders, which she thinks is just a ‘small fee’ they’ll be happy to pay.”

Just what exactly do the Greens think will happen if the taxpayer doubles benefits overnight?

At 2.56 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, it will be exactly 50 years since Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the surface of the moon. Great stuff.

But, let us not forget that this afternoon, between 3.15 and about 5.00 p.m., while Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were approaching the moon, it was also 50 years since the tragic and totally unnecessary death of Mary Jo Kopechne (eight days before her 29th birthday), in Poucha Pond, Chappaquiddick Island.

More importantly, let us not forget why she died. She died that Friday night, the 18th (quite possibly that Saturday morning, the 19th) of July 1969, because a coward by the name of Edward Moore Kennedy, ran from the scene of an accident that he was the sole cause of.

She lost her life, in my opinion, by suffocation (otherwise by drowning), but either way, almost certainly not quickly (which is why I suggest a nearly two-hour timeline), while he scrambled to save his political career.

He got to carry on living his privileged life as a U.S. Senator, for a further 40 years – dying at the age of 77 – even (laughingly) getting to consider a run for the presidency (in 1980), while her life was cut short.

One can only imagine her panic, her distress, her despair, as she increasingly realised she was going to die, horribly, while her erstwhile companion of just a few minutes, a scion of a deeply flawed family that had no right to be in its elevated position in US society, thought only of saving his miserable, cowardly, skin.

An American tragedy, for sure.

At this time, when we rightly celebrate the genius of the human race, let us not forget Mary Jo Kopechne.

While I find it poetic justice that the 757 has broken down, can I point out to all the critics of Air Force maintenance that these aircraft were designed to operate at a high intensity in a commercial environment. In military service they operate only a fraction of the time they would have as civil airliners. And it is very, very hard to keep such aircraft performing when they are not being used. It is not so much an issue of second hand aircraft as a matter of operating tempo.
