Golden Hammer Award winners at Delaware Valley H.S. honored for creative projects

Staff Report
@MyCentralJersey
Woodworking teacher Josh Paul (second from right) didn’t judge the Golden Hammer competition, but he had high praise for the winning projects. The winners are (from left) Ian Kulik, Alex Hammerstone and Mason Szeplaki.

The winners of this year’s Golden Hammer Awards at Delaware Valley High School are graduating seniors Ian Kulik of Alexandria Township, Mason Szeplaki of Frenchtown and Alex Hammerstone of Holland Township.

They are woodworking students, and their final projects were judged by Golden Hammer winners of previous years.

Besides winning power tools donated by Opdyke Lumber of Alexandria Township, the school pays for the wood used in the winning Golden Hammer projects.

Kulik's project is a picnic table with two inset stainless steel bins for keeping food or beverages on ice. Its top is thermally modified poplar, with a stout support structure made of treated pine. He’s bound for Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston to study construction management.

Woodworking teacher Josh Paul praised the design and said the project showed off the building, framing and fine woodworking skills that will serve him well in construction.

Hammerstone is a hunter and farmer, who was voted “Most Country” by his classmates. He made a cherry wood gun cabinet that can accommodate eight long guns, with shelves and drawers for additional storage and display. It’s about 6 feet tall.

“It was a huge undertaking and one of the best cabinets I’ve seen come out of the shop at Del Val,” Paul said.

Szeplaki’s project is an elegant octagonal Shaker candlestick table with an eight-pointed star inlay. The table is walnut, and the two-tone inlay is cherry and curly maple. Paul admires its craftsmanship and noted that an inlay like this is very difficult and because the wood Mason chose was in short supply “he had only one chance of getting it right,” and he succeeded.
