Datuk Seri Law Kiu Kiong

Datuk Seri Law Kiu Kiong is the founder and managing director of Woodman Group, whose core businesses are in oil palm plantations, shipbuilding and freight services, regarded as one of the most prominent businessmen in Sarawak.

He was born in 1953 in Sibu, Sarawak. As the second child of eight, Law started working at the young age of 13 to help put food on the table and give his younger siblings the opportunity to complete their education.

However, a humble family background and limited education never deterred him from his goal to one day become a successful businessman. While education is undoubtedly important, Law instead jump-started his career at an early age. His earlier modest employments include working as a general worker at a plywood mill, as a ship repairer and a mechanic, before building Woodman Group into the giant it is today.

Leading the Woodman Group

To date, Woodman Group has grossed approximately 50,000 ha of land bank in oil palm plantations in the Miri and Bintulu regions, of which almost half has matured. It has two palm oil mills in operation and has plans for two more in the near future. Woodman Group also started the first bio-fertilizer plant in Sarawak to manufacture nano bio-fertilizers, JQ Biotech Sdn Bhd.

Besides this, Woodman Group has a coal mining operation and owns one of the country’s finest golf courses, Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club. This golf course was the host for the Malaysian Ladies Open in 2006, which was broadcast on Astro and aired throughout Southeast Asia.

Aside from Woodman Group, Law is also involved in a number of thriving companies in Sarawak such as Boulevard Hypermarket and Departmental Store Sdn Bhd, Zedtee Plywood Sdn Bhd, Primaluck (M) Sdn Bhd (oil palm cultivation and CPO Mill), Alto Sdn Bhd (oil palm cultivation), Alambumi Palm Oil Mill Sdn Bhd, amongst others, in the capacity of director and advisor.

His wealth of experience gained through his years as a businessman is invaluable and always appreciated by his peers. He strongly believes that one can achieve anything with the right mind and focus. At one time, he even became proficient in conversational English by seeking out the help of an English tutor while working as a timber camp manager.

Service to the community

In addition to that, Law is as active in the community as he is in business. In 1998, he was elected the President of Lions Club of Miri Mandarin and thereafter appointed as the Club’s advisor.

Over the years, he has been involved in many charitable projects and activities, participating in the Melvin Jones Fellowship Program held by the Lions Clubs International Foundation and helping the less fortunate.

Also, Law has continuously reached out to outlying communities through generous support and donations to numerous schools, associations and clubs. The indigenous people of Ulu Baram are especially close to his heart.

However, his generosity is not limited to within the borders of Malaysia. Law also took part in the 4th Adopt A Child Program, organized by Sin Chew Daily, to provide to children in need, especially those in the rural villages of China.

Understanding the importance of providing children the opportunity to pursue a good education, Law aims to provide the best education possible for the next generation. Over the years, he has actively participated and donated to numerous educational institutions.

In 1999, he became the Chairman of Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) and Riam Institute of Technology (RIT), shaping these two institutions into some of the best private schools in the State. In 2007, Law became Joint Chairman of RRSS and RIT, humbled at the opportunity to serve alongside joint Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Jimmy Lau Hieng Wui.

Law enjoys hiking and golf, among other sports, but swimming is one that has stayed with him through the years. He always says that swimming is great for one’s health and is suitable for people of all ages and proficiency levels.

In 2008, he sponsored the 1st KK Law InterClub Age-Group Swimming Championship in 2008 and subsequently the 2nd one in 2009 and the 3rd one in 2010, all held at Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM). This competition celebrates and promotes swimming as a very healthy and enjoyable sport that everyone, regardless of age, race or religion, can participate in.

Law is the honorary advisor of Northern Sarawak Journalist Association and a shareholder of United Borneo Press Sdn Bhd (United Daily News). He is also a committee of Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Miri Chapter.

Datuk William Tiu Sii Chuon

Datuk William Tiu Sii Chuon

Datuk William Tiu Sii Chuon, is a prominent businessman with a broad portfolio of companies, the first of these being Syarikat Sri Minyak Tenaga Sdn Bhd, incorporated in 1986.

Now in his early sixties, he started from small as a deckhand, working his way up over 12 years to eventually become a ship engineer. In 1986, he began a Shell dealership with his first floating barge along the Rajang River, operated by four people, initially including his wife, Datin Siew Kim Geok. The business slowly flourished due to their hard work.

Having gained much experience in this Shell-operated diesel business, he began to share the benefits of the dealership with his friends and customers. He started with another new barge, Puteri Amelia, named after his seven-year-old daughter, which was launched at Sibu waterfront on 10 October 1991 by Sarawak area manager Patrick Chieng. From this, he went into the Shell lubricants business with minimum manpower, sometimes even driving the lorry to delivered lubricant products himself in the early years.

But, as the years went by, his Shell lubricants dealership started to move steadily under his capable leadership and now he is Sarawak’s largest Shell lubricants dealer, with 22 years in this industry.

Besides his extensive experience in dealing with petroleum products, lubricants and gas supply, he also owns and operates several related petroleum and transport companies, always quick to grab hold of new business opportunities and daring to go into ventures of a different field, from a palm fibre manufacturing factory to a real estate business.

His group of companies includes: Syarikat Sri Minyak Tenaga Sdn Bhd, Sri Minyak (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, SMT Oil SdnBhd, Swan Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Gorgeous Trading Sdn Bhd, Dinosaur Gas Sdn Bhd, Ada Tenaga Sdn Bhd, Swan Haulier Sdn Bhd, CM Fibre Processing Sdn Bhd, Sri Minyak Group Bhd, and Sri Minyak Bintulu Sdn Bhd.

A family man

Despite his success, Tiu puts family first. He has been married to Datin Siew Kim Geok for the past 38 years and together they have three children. He firmly believes that there must always be the right woman behind every successful businessman.

He has passed his years of experience, vision and efficient management and leadership skills down to his children. They are well trained to take over and manage some of the companies he first started. One of his companies, CM Fibre Processing Sdn Bhd, which is the pioneer company to bring in new technology in palm fibre processing and manufacturing, is now managed by his son, Johnson Tiu Siew Hua, aged 37. He is married with three children.

He is the managing director of the company and he is in charge of the whole production and export sale of palm fibre. His second child, Amelia Tiu, aged 34, married with one girl, is the Business Development Manager for the group of companies.

A capable woman with leadership skills who graduated with a Bachelors of Commerce majoring in marketing and accounting from the University of Western Australia, Perth, she is now in charge of Shell Lubricants products and as well as the petrol station at Mile 9, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. His third child, Pricilla Tiu, aged 32, a law graduate, also married with three children, and is now dealing with her own bearing business operated by her husband.

Apart from being business minded, he is also active in charity work. Both he and his beloved wife have supported the development of the Iban church in Sibu. He also sees a need to play a part in social responsibility.

Hence, they have made numerous donations to help the needy: Methodist Children’s Home, hospitals and the Kidney Foundation just to mention a few. This extends to their workers, always taking good care of the needs and coming to their assistance whenever circumstances and needs arise.

Group Engineers Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GEMSB), the company started by Kuek Eng Mong, reaches its 40th anniversary in 2020, providing mechanical and electrical solutions to some of Sarawak’s most imposing buildings and important projects. Still hands on as Director, Mr Kuek has built the company from nothing over four decades, moving from air-conditioning systems to become a major player in water infrastructure projects across the state.

Born in 1951, Kuek received his primary education from St Paul’s Primary School, and secondary education from what is now SMK Kuching High School.

In 1973, he graduated from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering after which he returned to Kuching and was employed as a Project Engineer for air-conditioning systems by a local Kuching contractor.

In 1980, Kuek founded Group Engineers Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GEMSB), with two other partners. Building on his initial experience, the company focused on supplying centralised air-conditioning systems for high rise buildings, successfully completing numerous projects between 1980 and 2000 across the state, including the Hilton Hotel, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Tahnamas Hotel, Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites, and Ariva Gateway Hotel.

From 1990 onwards, GEMSB started to venture into water infrastructure projects, such as municipal pump stations, water and wastewater treatment plants. GEMSB continued its growth by keeping abreast of the latest technology and best practice in the related fields.

GEMSB also formed successful partnerships with internationally renowned companies such as EBARA Corporation, Xylem Water Solutions, and other local and regional partners.

GEMSB became a UPKJ Class A Contractor in 2012, specialising in complete water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping systems including pipelines, large-scale industrial cooling systems, and specialized fire protection system for industrial facilities.

His core values

GEMSB embodies the core principals and values of Kuek. He believes in continuous transfer of knowledge and experience, promoting sharing from top management throughout the whole organization to foster a sense of common responsibilities.

This both bonds and empowers the team and leads to engagement with the company’s achievement and enriches work satisfaction. This has created a sense of belonging and family atmosphere in the work place, which has enabled GEMSB to attract and retain the younger generation of engineers and continue the growth of the company.

In 2019 GEMSB achieved another milestone with the successful certification of ISO 9001:2015. This embodies Kuek’s second principle: that profit in contracting can only be assured if mistakes are minimised.

By adopting and committing to the ISO Quality Management System, GEMSB can reduce mistakes and thereby provide reliable, quality engineering solutions to all GEMSB’s respected clients in the contracting community, and the government of Sarawak.

Chan Woon Peng

Chan Woon Peng

Representing Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI)

Chan Woon Peng began Chemsain Konsultant Sdn Bhd as a retirement project after a long and substantial career in government service.

Still serving as managing director and chairman of the board, he has built the firm into the largest multi-disciplinary scientific consulting firm in the country.

Chan grew up with 12 siblings in financially challenging circumstances.  He began his career in 1952 as a Laboratory Assistant in the City Analyst Department in Singapore and joined the Government Analytical Laboratory in Kuching in 1961.

Chan pursued his studies at the Royal College of Advanced Technology, Salford, England under a Federal Government Scholarship in 1964 which he completed with honours in 1969, qualifying as a Chartered Chemist.

From there, he continued his service with the Chemistry Department until his promotion to the post of director in 1979, the position he held till retirement in 1984.

Chemsain – a second start

Frustrated with nothing to do after retirement, Chan decided to take up a new challenge and established Chemsain Konsultant Sdn Bhd in November 1984.

Starting off from a rented premises at Tabuan Jaya, Kuching, as a small laboratory and supplier of laboratory/medical equipment, it was a rough journey building the company to what it is today, with a staff strength of about 500 located at 9 locations throughout Malaysia and Brunei.

Recently, the company moved into its purpose-built 100,000 square feet corporate building located at 172, Rock Road, Kuching.

Staying ahead of the curve

The constant mindset in developing Chemsain is to always stay ahead of market requirements so that the company is ready to take on new challenges. With this in mind, significant financial resources are always allocated to the development of capabilities.

Empowering the team is the most important approach, as they are the source of innovations and solutions and the producers of the quality and efficient output required to move the company forward.

Chemsain grows by targeting those technical capabilities which are currently unavailable in the local market, adapting technology for the local setting and then building skills in the local workforce.

Economic and social impact

Chemsain has been and will continue to have a positive economic impact in Sarawak by providing services to almost all sectors of industry.  Its services enable these industries to be developed in an environmentally sustainable manner, their processes to be optimised in producing the highest quality products, the safety and health of the workforce managed, all towards the preservation of the environment we live in.

Chan believes in giving back both through the company’s CSR initiatives and through his own voluntary work. He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Kuching since 1982, serving as President in 1987/1988.

Last year, in conjunction with Rotary Foundation and St Joseph’s Private School, Chemsain recently raised RM40,000 through its ‘End Polio Concert’ held at Chemsain Auditorium. Other CSR projects with Rotary Foundation include last year’s ‘Preserve Planet Earth’ project and this year’s ‘Eye Project’.

He has also been active in various, professional voluntary organisations, founding Institut Kimia Malaysia, Sarawak Branch, which was inaugurated in 1986, and serving as its chairman from 1986 to 2011 (25 years). He continues as adviser until present. He is also a Council Member of Institut Kimia Malaysia from 1985 to 2011 (26 years).

As a result of his business vision and dedicated service to society, Chan has been the recipient of numerous awards: Ahli Bintang Sarawak (ABS) and Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) during his government service; Institut Kimia Malaysia – IKM Gold Medal Award in 2006 for outstanding contribution to the profession of Chemistry in Malaysia and IKM Sarawak 30th Anniversary Distinguished Service Award in 2016.

Chai Mui Seng (Peter)

Chai Mui Seng (Peter)

Outstanding Entrepreneur 2019

Peter Chai Mui Seng is the executive chairman, managing director and also a major shareholder of DPI Holdings Bhd. After more than 40 years in operation, the company officially debuted on the ACE Market of Bursa Securities Bhd on January 7, 2019 in an IPO which was oversubscribed by 23 times.

Born in Perak in 1945, Chai’s family migrated to Sarawak when he was a baby, settling first in Siniawan, then Serian, and finally Kuching. Chai completed his basic education at Chung Hua Primary School Number 5, studied at Chung Hua Middle School No 1 for a year before switching to Deshon Private English School for an additional year.

He entered the job market early, picking up a variety of positions – kopitiam attendant, barman and even as a barber for the British army. Eventually he found a job as a clerk for a timber company before joining Guthrie & Company, a British trading company, as a junior salesman. Quick witted and at ease with customers, Chai felt that he had finally found his niche in sales. He enjoyed his work and he made commissions on top of his salary.

But the path to success is never simple and Chai, as the last employee in, was retrenched when the company moved and downsized. So, he decided it was time to start in business for himself, setting up a tile business with a capital of RM360. Buying mosaics from the Borneo Company and then selling them on, Chai was able to buy a delivery truck, doing most of the heavy work himself. The experience led him to try his hand at property development with his company, Seng Teck Construction.

But the project was not a success and Chai was left, for the first time, with business debts. However, he learned an important lesson, transforming himself into a meticulous planner in all his future dealings.

In the mid-1960s, the timber business began to boom and Chai worked for Sin Hua Timber as an assistant to the owner, travelling to Indonesia to lobby for timber concessions. It armed him with good knowledge of Kalimantan and Sumatra and of negotiating with Indonesian government officials and local businessmen. He subsequently decided to rejoin Guthrie & Co, at the request of an old friend, relishing the opportunity to return to his forte in sales.

At this time, Chai entered the paint business for the first time. Employed by Nippon Paint as the Operations Manager in Sabah, he expanded their business there before moving to Medan in Indonesia to be general manager, giving him all the skills to start out on his own.

DPI was incorporated in 1975 as a factory mixing solvents to produce thinner. But, in 1980, Chai started looking for new partners to expand his business to Peninsular Malaysia and went into a joint venture with a Singaporean chemical and solvent company.

Five years later, during the economic crisis of 1985, he decided to set out on his own again, taking over a company in Muar which manufactured paint and coatings.

Chai realigned DPI’s business strategy to focus on the growth in Malaysia, successfully taking the business, focusing on aerosol products for DIY, motorcycle refinishing, as well as craft and professional spray paint projects, from a small company of 20 manufacturing staff in Malaysia to 150 local staff and expansion through Singapore, Indonesia, China, Australia, Pakistan, Iran, Hong Kong, Thailand & Philippines.

Now, it is a market leader with over 25 per cent of the local spray paint market, supplying more than 300 colours to over 700 distributors and retailers in Malaysia.

DPI has established a reputation for quality by using state of the art production systems, from automated production lines to best in class blending equipment. This allowed Chai to promote DPI from an aerosol product manufacturing business in Malaysia to an international listed company on the ACE Market of Bursa Securities in 2019, aiming to construct a new factory with four new fully-automated aerosol filling lines, as well as to upgrade the production lines in the existing plant into full-automation.

Following DPI’s listing in 2019, Chai has begun an ambitious corporate social responsibility programme. On February 18, 2019, the Group launched its first CSR project known as “Beautify Subang Project” with an uplifting mural painted onto a building façade. This mural has since become an eminent landmark for SS 19, Subang Jaya area.

The launch of this CSR project was officiated by Subang Jaya State Assemblywoman, Subang Member of Parliament, EXCO PBT Selangor and Kinrara State Assemblyman.

In addition, DPI is the main sponsor of the mural painting located at Riverside of Kuching, Sarawak and launched by State Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in conjunction with the Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival this year.
