Notes from the Dome: Norwood project moving along and a Bill 9 oops

Article content

The CapitalCare Norwood redevelopment project in Edmonton is ticking along, with the government requesting tenders for a construction manager for the continuing care facility.

The $364-million project will increase the number of beds to 350 from 205 and improve patient-centred care by providing programs and services at a central location.

The redevelopment includes construction of a new 40,000-square-metre main facility, demolition of the North Pavilion building and the CHOICE Day Centre, after construction of a new replacement building, and a major renovation of the Angus McGugan Pavilion.

Construction is planned to get underway in the summer of 2019 and run through until 2023.

The public request for proposals will run for four weeks.

UCP form letter on Bill 9 sent to (CONSTITUENCY)

A constituent in Airdrie was rather put out to receive a form letter from United Conservative Party MLA Angela Pitt after writing to her Tuesday asking why she’s abstaining from voting on Bill 9.

To add insult to injury, the letter left out the name of the riding, calling it simply (CONSTITUENCY) instead.

Oops.

Bill 9 will create a 50-metre, no-protest buffer zone around abortion clinics. The UCP is refusing to debate the bill, and most of the party caucus say they will abstain from voting.

United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney said form letters are fairly usual.

Meanwhile, Strathmore-Brooks Independent MLA Derek Fildebrandt says he will be proposing an amendment to the bill.

He said he’d like to see the legislation extended to make it fair — so vegans can’t demonstrate outside restaurants, for example.
