Uzbekistan and Afghanistan are set to deepen cooperation in the textile sector, according to a statement from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan.
The chamber’s chairman, Davron Vakhabov, paid a working visit to Kabul and Kandahar, where he held a series of meetings with representatives of the interim Afghan government and local companies. One of the key discussion points was the implementation of promising projects in textiles and fiber processing.
During the visit, Vakhabov signed a memorandum of partnership with Abdul Hamid Akhundzada, head of the State Textile Corporation of Afghanistan. The signing ceremony was attended by Anwar-ul-Haq, Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, along with the ministers of finance, economy, mining and petroleum.
Vakhabov also visited the industrial zone in Kandahar, where he explored the potential for launching joint ventures using local capacities and discussed plans to restore and restart Uzbek-made equipment.
The two sides reached an agreement to jointly implement projects aimed at processing a minimum of 50,000 tons of cotton. Afghanistan will export cotton yarn to Uzbekistan, while dyed fabrics for garment production will be exported in the opposite direction.
Earlier in March, Vakhabov visited the Nasaji Textile Factory in Mazar-i-Sharif. During that visit, the parties agreed on the supply of cotton fiber and yarn to Uzbekistan, as well as the procurement of textiles and semi-finished goods for garment manufacturing.
