Scholarship winner

Nathaniel Wosmek, Emily, will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year from the Minnesota Telecom Alliance Foundation, Josh Netland, general manager of Emily Cooperative Telephone Company said in a news release.

Wosmek will graduate from Pine River-Backus High School and plans to attend Northern State University. He is the son of Lorie and Chad Wosmek.

The Minnesota Telecom Alliance received 140 scholarship applications from across the state.

In awarding the scholarship to Wosmek, Netland said, "We're happy to have this chance to make an investment in this student's college education. Rural communities need educated and talented young people to be our leaders of the future. It makes us all proud at Emily Cooperative Telephone Company when one of the statewide winners is from our area."

The foundation is part of the Minnesota Telecom Alliance, a trade organization based in St. Paul representing more than 44 telephone companies and cooperatives in the state.

Minnesota State University-Moorhead

Two area students will graduate Friday, May 17, from Minnesota State University-Moorhead: Jordan Ackerman, a 2010 Pine River-Backus High School graduate, Master of Science degree; and Brett Peterson, a 2014 Pequot Lakes High School graduate, Bachelor of Science degree.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The following area students graduated May 3-4 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Brooke Noelle Crider, Nisswa, Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts degree; and Courtney Lillian Newland, Breezy Point, graduate studies, Doctor of Audiology.

Minnesota State University-Mankato

The following area students graduated May 11 from Minnesota State University-Mankato at the end of spring semester: Alexandria Murnane, Backus, Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, magna cum laude; Marcus Lambert, Emily, Bachelor of Science degree in construction management, summa cum laude; Katie Rubitschung, Hackensack, Master of Science degree in biology; Devon Charlier, Nisswa, Bachelor of Science degree in community health education, summa cum laude; and Reece Livingston, Pequot Lakes, Bachelor of Science degree in mass media.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Courtney Skluzacek, a 2014 Pequot Lakes High School graduate, will graduate with a Masters

of Education degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She obtained her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in December 2017.

St. Mary's University-Winona

Jacob Tschida, the son of Joseph and Tracy Tschida of Pine River, recently received the Father Andrew Fabian Scholarship (philosophy) when outstanding senior students at St. Mary's University in Winona were recognized at the annual Honors Convocation.
